The Fine Print
A project, beginning to end
To get a project started, email info@quojure.com, call 415-553-4000, or fax to 415-553-4020.
Tell us what you need, and how soon you’ll need it, and we’ll discuss what it will cost. We’ll assign a researcher based on his or her experience in the particular area of law, and the researcher will then contact you. You can control the work to the extent you deem necessary, but since the idea is to get the work off your desk and off your mind, the researcher usually assumes the responsibility, does the research and drafts the document, and submits it to us for editing.
Once the document is in final form, edited for form and content, we'll email it to you. If it’s a court document, it will be ready to sign and file.
Cost
We charge by the hour: $125 for routine projects, and $155 for expedited projects. We ask for a deposit of 2/3 of the estimate, and payment of the invoiced balance within 30 days. We accept all major credit cards and can do check by phone.
Routine usually means we have a week to ten days, or more for appellate matters; rush means we have to get the job done in less than four or five days.
But of course the cost depends on the project. Just as the cost of a car or TV depends on the year, make, and model, the cost of a research project depends on your request. All our work is custom built; we don’t use form complaints or canned briefs.
We provide estimates for every project. We do not take on projects with an estimate of less than four hours, but we charge only for the time spent. If you prefer a flat rate, we can accommodate you. And we will work with you on budget—we know that sole practitioners often must dig into their own pockets to pay for our work.
There is no charge for the initial consultation.
Managing Attorneys
Quo Jure’s managing attorneys and editors, Jim Schenkel and Mary Donovan, are both graduates of UC Hastings Law. In addition to practicing law, they managed Hastings Research, which also provided legal writing and research services to practicing attorneys. In 1993 they founded Quo Jure Corporation.
Research Attorneys
Most of our research attorneys have been with Quo Jure for 10, 20, or more years, and have written hundreds of briefs. Some have their own practices; others devote themselves exclusively to legal writing.
Once you've established a good working relationship with one of our research attorneys, you can request that the same person be assigned to do further work on a case as new issues arise.
Other details
We understand the importance of confidentiality, and so do all our research attorneys. We hold all information we receive in strictest confidence. The information we provide to you is attorney work product, not subject to discovery. Since we rarely work for the defense bar, a conflict of interest is unlikely to arise. Indeed, no conflict has arisen since our incorporation in 1993.
Although we're all lawyers here, we do not practice law. We carry no malpractice insurance to cover work done through Quo Jure. We cannot work for pro se litigants; we work only for practicing attorneys representing clients. We are careful never to interfere with your relationship with your client: any information regarding the case must come from you, the attorney, not from the client. We do not talk to clients regarding their cases.
Quo Jure stands behind its work—we wouldn’t still be around if we didn’t do good work, and do it timely. Our repeat customers are why we’re still in business.
